     Solutions:

     a.  Determine whether the noun of amount refers to one unit and is

         therefore singular or whether it refers to a number of

         individual units and is therefore plural.

     c.  If the collective noun refers to a group as a whole, use a

         singular verb, or if the collective noun refers to each member

         of a group individually, use a plural verb.
