Age-Related Differences in Antihypertensive Medication Adherence in Hispanics: A Cross-Sectional Community-Based Survey in New York City, 2011-2012. Below you find some information about the article.
3. Methodology: Participants were stratified by age group and bivariable analyses were conducted to assess the relationship between predictors and medication adherence. Poisson regression models with robust variance were built and adjusted prevalence ratios were calculated for medication adherence.
1. Sample: The sample included 1,043 Hispanic adults across three Manhattan neighborhoods from the Washington Heights/Inwood Informatics Infrastructure for Community-Centered Comparative Effectiveness Research Project. The sample consisted of only respondents who identified as Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish and who had a diagnosis of hypertension.
2. Study Type: Cross-sectional study using snowball sampling
3. Results: Younger adults were found to be more likely to have low adherence to hypertension medications as compared to older adults. No demographic variables were found to be associated with adherence among the younger adults, but in older adults age and primary language were positively associated with adherence.
4. Conclusions: Overall, the Hispanic community had low levels of hypertensive medication adherence. This paper is one of the first to explore factors associated with adherence on an age-stratified level.
5. Recommendations: Evidence from this paper can be used to develop age-specific intervention programs to improve hypertension medication adherence among Hispanics. Equitable adherence will require special attention to the needs of groups who have low levels of adherence.
