1. In the following interview, James Robinson discusses his thesis about why nations fail,

portrayed in the book of the same title that he wrote with Daron Acemoglu. Discuss the

factors that he mentions about why some nations fail and others prosper. If you have this

book, read the final chapter (conclusions) and add ideas shared there to complement your

answer. Also, provide examples and use ideas discussed in class to answer this question.

2. Business environment is crucial for economic development. The World Bank assesses

each year the climate for business all over the world. Check the Doing Business 2019

report and prepare a table showing the ranking of the best and worst performers countries

in Latin America. Discuss the indicators that support that assessment and discuss three

policy solutions to improve business environment on those countries. (25%)

3. The World Bank also prepared national Doing Business reports for the case of Mexico

and Colombia. Pick one of these two countries, read the report, and describe and explain

the differences by region and provide a general overview based on the key components of

the report. Imagine that you are creating this for a company that is assessing whether to

invest or not in such country, explain advantages, disadvantages and risks involved.

4. The World Economic Forum produces every year the Global Competitiveness report that

provides a snapshot of the economy of each country of the world. Create a table to point

out the best and worst performers of Latin America on this ranking, and then, compare

two economies and provide an analysis based on key indicators highlighted in the report.
