Understanding Prejudice

According to Cherry (2015), prejudice is a predetermined opinion, attitude, or feeling toward people in various groups. Bias is a social threat to multiple groups in society as it cultivates negative feelings, conventional thinking, and partiality treatments. The many forms of prejudice include racism, classicism, ageism, nationalism, xenophobia, religious bias, and homophobia. The social state of a surrounding determines the nature of bias, therefore, inclining people to conform towards such setups. Role models such as parents, entertainers, politicians, and mentors as well as religious leaders do influence actions and thinking of the general public whom they set standards on their opinions. In several instances, such sentiments are prone to sidelining, disregarding, or belittling views of individuals emerging from other groups. Prejudice is a mental mistake that follows when people fail to be rational, logical, and systematic in their arguments or perceptions, but conversely, opt to depend on opinions of the majority and their role models as facts.

A.Introduction

1)Title – ‘Understanding Prejudice: How It Forms and How to Prevent It’

2)Issues –Prejudice involves a certain group of people viewing another person or group in a certain way. The common features associated with stereotypes are stereotyped perceptions, negative feelings, and the practice of discriminating against a certain group. Social influences contribute to the way perceive one another, and this should be overcome by all means; otherwise, it forms an unbreakable cycle.

  • Thesis statement – Prejudice refers to a social state that may occur due to people’s conformity towards a particular social class or society.

B.Main ideas

1. Prejudice by stereotyping is a considerable challenge in the society

a)Bias originates from various social stereotypes, which guide the direct attitudes of a person or a group. People influence other people’s actions, because they assist in setting standards that people subconsciously try to fulfill. For instance, people in power exercise more influence over people’s decision making, because they are subconsciously role models for the society and their opinion is held with very high regard.

b) It is usually applied in passing judgment regarding an individual believed to belong to a particular group.

c) It often occurs in various forms: culture, vocation, race, sex, nationality, religion, age, socio-economic status, and sexual orientation.

2. Prejudice grows in the early stages of an individual’s life because children have a higher probability of starting to develop concepts depending on what their parents/caregivers or the society exposes them to.

a)Children have the ability to learn and pick-up ideas very easily and quickly based on their surroundings.

b) They are also very impressionable, mostly when the adults around them pass particular ideas to them.

c)Additionally, they pass these problems to the next generations, because they bring up their children with the same beliefs. Therefore, at the end of it all, a never-ending cycle is formed; and it is difficult to break.

d)Lastly, there is a social-learning theory that states that the children of today easily learn from everyone and everything within their reach. This makes it hard to weed out and remove the negativities they encounter in their daily lives.

3. There are several techniques that we can apply to ensure a reduction in the levels of prejudice among people:

a)Putting in place laws as well as regulations that demand fairness and equality in treatment for all kinds of people and groups.

b)Attaining awareness and support from the public regarding anti-prejudice social norms.

c)Heightened association with people belonging to different social groups.

  • Making sure that people have awareness regarding the inconsistencies linked to their own personal perceptions.
  • Conclusion

Prejudice is a mental mistake among people that happens in a situation where human beings easily conform to the beliefs of the majority or the perceptions of a fascinating leader and what they talk about. Things like cults are formed because charismatic leaders have the capability of influencing a person or a group in order to have similar beliefs that they have in this same way. The fear associated with the inability to fit in within a certain group results to people adopting similar perceptions in order to develop the sense of belonging.
