Your Assignment Task
Write an essay in which you examine this word closely for what it means, how it’s used, and how it shapes
knowledge, meaning, and perception depending on user. Your essay should analyze the ways in which this
keyword is understood by different audiences (the professional/expert audience and the generic public
audience). Explain not only what the differences are, but some of the reasons for (and significance of) those
differences.
For example: simply stating that scientists and non-scientists use the word “theory” differently is not sufficient.
You need to probe the significance of those differences, as well as the effect. What does it mean or signify that
the word is sometimes misunderstood or, worse, willfully distorted? Why do some people equate “theory” with
“opinion”? Why does it matter?
Organize your essay around a clear, analytical thesis that fits the assigned task and that establishes your own
authorial voice for the task. Body paragraphs should develop and advance your thesis in a coherent, logical
